Tips to help truckers avoid fatigue

Truck drivers have tough, difficult jobs with long hours and a high demand for their services. This can make fatigue behind the wheel of an 80,000-pound vehicle a very big issue on the highways of Ohio. Plus, driving itself is something that often makes people feel drowsy from the hum of the tires on the road and the long, monotonous hours doing the same thing.

How can truckers prevent fatigue and keep everyone safe? They need to:

  • Avoid night driving, as the human body is naturally tired from midnight to 6:00 a.m.
  • Get as much sleep as possible at night, avoiding activities that keep them up late or inhibit their sleep cycle.
  • Always follow laws and regulations regarding hours worked per week and how much they can drive before they need to take a break.
  • Not be afraid to stop for a nap when necessary. Unfortunately, this is often hard because of tight schedules.
  • Eat healthy foods, drink enough water and pay attention to their diet. It's dangerous, for instance, to try to drive with the highs and lows of things like sugar and caffeine.
  • Never drive when taking a medication that makes it more likely that they could feel tired.
  • Never push it just to make a few extra miles. Drivers often crash when they know they're tired and they're just trying to get the job done first.

Truck drivers who do these things can be safe, responsible drivers, but the reality is that not all of them are going to do it. Anyone who gets injured in an accident with a fatigued driver must know what legal options they have.
