Car, truck accidents and other vehicle fatalities reach 40K again

Ohioans should know that motor vehicle accidents are one of the most common ways for people to die unexpectedly in the U.S. These fatalities can be due to a truck accident, a car accident, a motorcycle accident or any other type of highway crash. Researchers keep track of the statistics as part of their attempt to find ways to improve safety. Regardless of their information and the steps taken by law enforcement, legislators and regulators to improve safety, accidents continue to happen causing injuries and death. This information can be important to anyone who has lost a loved one in a crash and needs legal assistance to pursue compensation.

A recent report from the National Safety Council says that there were more than 40,000 highway deaths in 2018. This was the third year in a row where the number surpassed that number. There was a moderately positive reduction in the number of fatalities in 2018 when compared to 2016-2017. In 2018, there were one percent fewer deaths. Also concerning is the number of people who were injured in these accidents: an estimated 4.5 million. That too had a reduction of one percent from the prior year.

Specifics are not yet available in the NSC study; therefore, it is not known how many of the fatalities were in a trucking accident, a car accident or any other type of accident. The NSC uses fatality numbers from every state in the nation along with the District of Columbia to come to its conclusions. Regarding trucks, the latest numbers were provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It said that in 2017, nearly 4,800 people died in truck crashes when the trucks weighed more than 10,000 pounds.

Trucks are an intimidating sight on the roads and people who share the road with them must be cognizant of the risks they present. Being in a truck accident while in a smaller passenger vehicle can cause serious injuries that make long hospitalizations and extensive treatment necessary. When there is a fatality, the family of the person who died will want answers as to how and why it happened along with adequate compensation for all that was lost. Having legal advice from a firm that understands the statistics and can help with truck accidents is crucial to filing a successful claim. This is the first step those who have been affected by an accident should take.
