Statistics show rise in fatal truck accidents from 2016 to 2017

Given the number of semi-trucks that are on the road in Ohio, they are an understandable concern to people who share the road with them. Their size, speed and the distances they travel make them a significant risk for being in a crash. Researchers and government agencies keep track of truck accidents to gauge how and why they happen in the hopes that there are steps to take to reduce their number and make people safer. A worrisome trend in the latest truck accident numbers available says that there was a rise in fatal truck accidents from 2016 to 2017.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that there was a 9 percent in fatalities in 2017 vs. 2016. This came about while the number of overall road fatalities lowered by 1.8 percent. The total of deaths was 37,133 in 2017. This is a reduction from 37,803 the previous year. Those who died in large truck accidents was 4,761. The previous year, there were 4,369. Large trucks are classified as those that weigh more than 10,000 pounds.

An administrator for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) states that a substantial number of deaths involved vehicles that weighed less than 26,000 pounds and they might not be under FMCSA regulation. The number of deaths with vehicles weighing 10,000 pounds to 14,000 pounds doubled. For crashes in which there were more than two vehicles involved, including a large truck, there was an increase in fatalities of 280 from 2016 to 2017, amounting to an 8.8 percent increase. For those riding in the large trucks regardless of how many vehicles were involved, there was a rise of 16 percent to 116.

This happened concurrently with the overall number of fatalities across the spectrum reducing. Causes of the accidents was notable. There was a 5.6 percent reduction in the number of fatal accidents due to speeding in 2017. Distracted driving accidents were factors in 8.5 percent of all fatal accidents, coming to 3,166.

With these statistics, it is important for people who are on the road with trucks to understand that the dangers they face are ever-present and can cause serious injuries with medical expenses and a drastically changed life if they survive. As these numbers show, many people do not survive. When there are injuries or fatalities in truck accidents, it is crucial to have legal assistance from an experienced truck accident law firm.
