Since childbirth is such a common occurrence in Ohio and across the country, there is a misplaced belief that in the United States, it is generally safe and complications for mother and child are rare. Unfortunately, that is not accurate. In fact, according to a new investigation by USA Today, the U.S. is the riskiest developed nation in which to give birth. This information is important to new parents who saw the mother suffer an injury or die or had a child that was impacted by a birth injury, as it can be the key to filing a lawsuit to receive compensation.
There are more than 50,000 severe injuries and 700 deaths to mothers annually. The study indicates that a minimum of 50 percent of the fatalities are preventable, and 50 percent of the injuries could have been prevented or reduced had the care been improved. It was also found that the medical professionals are not acting as quickly as they should to address potential problems. The death rate for mothers in childbirth in the U.S. has been rising in recent years. There were more than 26 for every 100,000 births in 2015. This is the worst in developed countries.
One problem is the failure to act by oversight entities and regulators. For example, Medicare has a requirement that it report when there are complications with patients getting knee and hip procedures, but not complications in childbirth. According to the study, women are prone to having high blood pressure and losing significant amounts of blood while giving birth. Sixty percent of those fatalities in which it is due to high blood pressure, and 90 percent of those due to blood loss were preventable had action been taken to intervene. Effective actions include giving medication sooner and having greater accuracy with how much blood was lost. Many hospitals do not adhere to established protocol to treat high blood pressure.
People place a great deal of trust in the medical professionals overseeing a birth. When that trust is violated and serious injuries or death result from mistakes, misdiagnosis or negligence, it is imperative to get to the bottom of what happened. A law firm that has experience in medical malpractice cases and birth injury can be integral to a case and should be called as soon as possible.
