Is a cure to mesothelioma on the way?

The cure for cancer has always been a moonshot project. But as advances in technology, data systems and AI, are we getting closer to figuring it out?

Researchers are now hoping that genetic analysis and immunotherapy based on a comprehensive data analysis can help defeat mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer linked to asbestos exposure, according to an article in Information Age.

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare but deadly cancer—each year, there are 3,000 new cases in the U.S., and it doesn’t usually respond to conventional methods of treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation. The cancer develops in the lining of various internal organs, including the lungs, abdomen and heart, with an extremely poor life expectancy and very little hope of a cure, at least through conventional methods.

Mesothelioma is mostly associated with asbestos exposure. Railroad and construction workers, for example, are frequently diagnosed with mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure in the 70s and 80s.

Is there hope?

Scientists and researchers are now hoping that personalized treatment plans, based on genome sequencing and data analysis can help doctors craft smarter cures. In particular, there has been hope around the development of immunotherapy, photodynamic treatments and even cold treatment.

However, new methods still have to go through clinical trials and secure approval. In some cases, FDA approval can be bypassed if the person being treated has a rare disease (such as mesothelioma).

For many, these treatments could represent a last, best hope.

Those with asbestos-related mesothelioma could also benefit from discussing their situation with an attorney, as exposure is frequently linked to occupational risks.
