Ohioans: Be especially aware of dog bite risks this summer

Did you know that you can be at a higher risk of being bitten by a dog during summer months?

This shouldn't be that surprising, considering the fact that more people are out and about more often during the summer. This is especially true for kids who are on break from school and spending more time playing outside. With all this in mind, we want to give readers a few reminders about safety around dogs and what to do in the event of a bite.

Owners: keep your dogs secure

If you own a dog, you have an obligation to ensure your pet is not a threat to others, especially if a dog has killed or injured a person or other domestic animal.

To prevent biting incidents, keep dogs leashed when out for a walk, and make sure you are in control. Post signs on your property alerting others to the presence of a potentially threatening dog. Keep dogs away from unfamiliar young children, even if there is no history of biting.

Non-owners: avoid aggressive behaviors

You can avoid being bitten by a dog by avoiding the behaviors it might see as signs of aggression.

Don't touch a dog's food, or provoke the dog. Don't play rough with a dog or assume a strange dog is friendly. As noted in this news article, be especially aware of the warning signs that a dog is feeling protective or threatened and get or stay away.

Dog bite victims: know your legal rights

If a dog does bite you, it is crucial that you get medical attention. Left untreated, bite injuries can get infected and lead to other serious medical conditions.

You can then file a report, and if the bite occurred in Cleveland, then the dog will need to be placed in quarantine for 10 days for examination.

If your injuries are serious, then you may also want to consider filing a legal claim seeking damages. This can be especially important if the pet owner's insurance companies do not offer adequate financial relief for the full extent of your injuries.
